# AI License Plate Recognition in Taiwan: Overcoming Day and Night Lighting, Weather and Diverse Plates

> License plate recognition has to do more than read the number: in Taiwan it must cope with day and night lighting, backlight, rain, camera angles, and old and new plates alongside cars and motorcycles. HITech AI plate recognition supports diverse plates with a single engine and outputs the plate background and character color, for parking lots, residential communities and outdoor roads. HITech (Heimdall Intelligent Technology) uses deep-learning technology to provide **license plate recognition for Taiwan's many plate formats and real-world sites**. From parking lot entrances and residential community access control to outdoor roads, plate recognition must do more than read the number correctly: it has to cope with changing day and night lighting, different weather, vehicle angles, and cars and motorcycles with old and new plates side by side. HITech keeps optimizing recognition for different environments and plate types, helping management systems obtain stable and complete plate information.

## Plate recognition challenges in real environments

How hard plate recognition is depends not only on the plate itself but also on camera position, lighting, weather and how the vehicle is moving. In real deployments the system has to adapt to different site conditions rather than work only under ideal capture conditions.

**Day and night lighting and high contrast**: a parking lot entrance may combine a dim indoor area with strong outdoor light, while outdoor roads face changing sun direction, backlight and headlights at night. HITech uses AI image recognition to handle plate images under different brightness and lighting conditions, reducing the effect of environmental changes on results.

**Wide-angle and moving-vehicle recognition**: at parking lot entrances, roadside parking meters and sites with existing surveillance cameras, the camera cannot always be mounted directly in front of the vehicle. HITech AI plate recognition handles plate images captured at wide angles, recognizing plates at angles beyond 60° under specified test conditions. It can also be applied to recognizing moving vehicles, giving more flexibility in camera placement and site layout.

**Cars, motorcycles and different plate sizes**: in Taiwan, car, motorcycle and heavy motorcycle plates differ in size, mounting position and numbering. Motorcycle plates in particular are small and usually have to be captured from behind. HITech supports car and motorcycle plates with the same AI recognition engine, so parking lots can manage entry and exit for different vehicle types together.

**Complex weather and plate condition**: outdoor recognition may face rain, plate glare, dirt and worn plates. HITech keeps optimizing its AI models with data from diverse scenes to improve adaptability across environments.

## Support for old and new Taiwan plates and diverse formats

Plates from different eras are still in use on Taiwan's roads, including the common old 6-character and new 7-character car plates, as well as motorcycle, business vehicle, EV and special-purpose plates. The HITech recognition engine handles different character counts and arrangements without restricting results to a single fixed format, helping parking and community access systems recognize plates from different eras and vehicle types.

Beyond common alphanumeric characters, HITech also supports some special-purpose plates with Chinese characters, such as the tested 使, 外, 軍 (military), 試 (test) and 臨 (temporary) plates. The technology and test cases will be covered in a follow-up feature article.

For the older dedicated EV plates with their distinctive appearance, HITech can also provide recognition and classification information to support EV-only space management.

## More than the plate number: plate appearance information

Traditional plate recognition mainly aims to obtain the plate number, but in real management applications the plate's appearance can provide extra information. Besides the plate number, the HITech AI recognition engine outputs **the plate background and character color**, helping management systems determine the plate type and apply management rules for each site.

## From parking lots to outdoor roads

HITech [AI license plate recognition](/products/smart-transportation/license-plate-recognition) can be deployed in parking lots, residential community access control and outdoor roads, with a CPU, GPU or NPU computing architecture chosen to fit each application, balancing recognition performance and hardware cost.

**CPU computing for fast parking lot recognition**: for parking lots and community access control, the HITech recognition engine runs directly on the CPU with no dedicated GPU required. With an inductive loop trigger, it captures an image and runs plate recognition as soon as a vehicle enters the detection zone, quickly obtaining the plate number and passing it to parking billing, whitelist management and barrier control.

**GPU acceleration for real-time 4K recognition**: for outdoor roads, high-resolution video and multi-camera sites with heavier computing needs, HITech supports real-time 4K recognition with GPU acceleration and handles multiple video sources depending on the hardware, meeting the needs of different smart transportation applications. Real-time 4K recognition can also be achieved on NPU platforms that meet the performance requirements.

**NPU platform support**: the HITech recognition engine also supports NPU hardware acceleration platforms, with models deployed and optimized for each chip architecture. Under specific hardware configurations and test conditions, NPU solutions can match or exceed some Jetson GPU embedded solutions in recognition performance, offering more edge AI deployment options.

**Cross-platform deployment and integration**: HITech supports Windows, Linux and embedded computing platforms, so each site can choose suitable computing hardware and integrate existing cameras, inductive loops, barriers and management systems, reducing the complexity of building and maintaining the system. Supported resolution, number of streams and recognition performance depend on hardware specifications and deployment conditions.

As of 2026, more than 4,000 HITech plate recognition systems have been deployed across Taiwan in parking lots, residential communities, smart transportation and other settings, with outdoor accuracy of up to 99% and parking-lot accuracy of up to 99.9%. Actual performance is affected by image quality, equipment configuration and site conditions, and is subject to on-site testing.

## Try Taiwan AI license plate recognition for free

To see how HITech AI plate recognition performs, go to the ["Try Recognition"](/#experience) section on our homepage and upload a photo of a Taiwan plate for an online test. No software to install and no account needed: upload a photo within the free trial quota, or use one of the built-in sample images. The system returns the image with the plate location marked, along with the plate number, plate background color, character color and confidence scores. Please use photos of your own vehicle or the sample images, and avoid uploading images containing other people's personal data.

HITech also supports plates from Japan, the United States, Europe and Vietnam; the online trial currently covers Taiwan plates. If you need plate recognition for parking, community access control or smart transportation, please contact HITech and we will propose a recognition and integration solution suited to your site.
